As we head into the 88th session of the Texas legislative session, the legislature will once again decide how to allocate the $37 billion dollars expected budget for the Texas Department of Transportation, as well as the transportation related spending at the Texas Departments of Public Safety and Motor Vehicles, and trauma care and other costs of the transportation system.
Texas continues a unique and radical public transit austerity program, with the dedicated state funding for public transit in major metros at zero and a ban on metro regional cooperation on transit funding, a combination of policies faced by no other major metros in the nation.
The State of Texas continues to spend significant money enumerating the estimated costs of congestion through the TTI Urban Mobility Report, yet the state only produces a single line on a single page annual report on the costs of crashes, which is known to be double or triple the costs of congestion.
The stat you’ve heard about 97% of TxDOT funds being dedicated to roads is incorrect. The idea that has taxes pay for roads is incorrect. The idea that sprawl and freeways can allow affordability is also incorrect.

Our Policy Hacking meetup will be held on the 1st floor in Devvie. Enter the large Capital Factory space from the main lobby. From the reception desk, head to your left to get to Devvie.
Light snacks and drinks will be available for in-person guests. Please follow CDC guidelines out of respect for the other humans around you.
